Hatchet 3 was the film that was a horror in the Hatchet trilogy. It chronicles the ongoing adventures of Victor Crowley and his murderous rampage through Honey Island Swamp in Louisiana. The film features Kane Hodder as Victor Crowley, Brian Quinn as Deputy Winslow as well as Rileah Vanderbilt in the role of Misty.
The practical effects in the film are the film's greatest strength. Hatchet 3 is a horror movie that uses CG effects less than many others. Hatchet 3 has a number of makeup effects that are practical and sets, which results in some truly terrifying scenes throughout the film.
The cast gives a solid performance with Kane Hodder (click articles) being the most intimidating villain. The dialogue is reminiscent of an 1980s slasher film. It is witty and funny enough. There are also some really funny moments throughout that offer some humor in the midst of the terrifying action.
The problem is that the budget is extremely small (reportedly one million dollars) the majority of locations used in the film are re-used locations from earlier films in the series. For instance the exact boathouse location was used twice in the film. A lot of the locations feel like they were reused from previous films in this franchise. This can make it feel almost too familiar for those who have watched Hatchet or Hatchet 2
Overall, Hatchet 3 was very enjoyable. I found it to be very similar to other entries in the series. However, Hatchet 3 provided lots of thrilling thrills and hilarious performances from its actors.
